Sulfur Crested
Three sub-species, the Lessor, the Medium and the Greater Sulfur Crested are usually found in the pet market. They range in size from a smaller Cockatoo of 13 to 14 inches to the Greater who can be 20 inches.
Keep these birds busy with toys, toys, toys, as they are destructive in nature and need to be entertained. Noise can be a concern for owners. Not for apartments or condos.
Set the parameters early when owning this Cockatoo. Just like children, they seem to do best when they are on a schedule and know what to expect.
Feed them a pelleted diet, lots of fresh veggies, pasta, rice, white meat, eggs and some seed and nuts.
Long lived, these birds can be in a family for fifty plus years. Talking seems to vary bird to bird, some are excellent talkers while others may only have a vocabulary of six or eight words.
Consider noise factor, dusty feathers, and destructive behavior before you select this species. However, if it becomes your choice, you will be rewarded with a Cockatoos loving personality, clownish behavior and love of their people.
