Jardines
One of the Poicephalus group, this chunky little powerhouse is one bird that I've never seen anyone regret sharing their life with. Often thought to be the perfect parrot, Jardine's are approximately 11 inches in length and are native to Africa, Liberia, and Tanzania.
They have a long life span for a smaller bird, often thought to live forty to fifty years. Their out going personality will pull you in to their lives almost immediately. They thrive on interaction and seem to adore learning tricks and entertaining. Very good talkers, they are capable of dozens of words in their vocabularies.
Males and females must be DNAed or surgically sexed to be told apart. And both are equally good at talking. When thinking of a cage for these sweeties, think BIG. They are active, playful, and clowns, so a lot of space is mandatory. 32" x 24" is recommended cage size. Toys, toys, and more toys also need to be in your purchase.
Feed them a high quality pelleted diet, vegetables, fruit, pasta and grains. Some seed and nuts and sprouts will also be appreciated.
Owners of these parrots will tell you they don't know why anyone owns anything else, and they may be right when it comes to talking, friendly behavior, being relatively clean birds, and intelligence.
An obviously good choice for most anyone starting out in the bird world, or even adding to an existing bird household.
