Amazon Parrots
Many species of Amazons are available. We always suggest that you call to check current available species.
The Amazon parrots must be called intelligent, adaptable, creatures. Their species numbers by 27, although at this time, 19 Amazon species are on the endangered animal list and in nature, their numbers dwindle daily with destruction of natural habitat.
These creatures are one of the easiest of parrots to own, when properly kept. They eat whatever you provide them, so feeding them a good diet should not be difficult. They are not easily frightened by new experiences or situations and can be fabulous talkers, even singing whole songs in tune when taught.
Before you purchase an Amazon, however, you should consider that they tend to love one person, or one gender. Most Amazons will prefer males or females and be quite obvious about their preference. And keep in mind, Amazons, when they bite, can bite very hard. So this may not be the best choice for children.
They play very hard and need space, although they usually are not cage destructive, so a large cage can be purchased more inexpensively. Cage size should be 36" x 24" when possible. Toys are mandatory for this bird, not an option of ownership! They love their toys and play constantly throughout their day. It is best to offer some type of play stand for these rambunctious birds so that they can have time out of their cages with lots of exercise. They do have a tendency to gain weight and develop fatty tumors, so keep high fat foods out of their diets and give them plenty of time to work off weight.
Most commonly kept as pets, are the four usually considered to be the best talkers, the Double Yellow Headed Amazon, the Blue Fronted Amazon, the Yellow Crowned Amazon and the Yellow Napes. Any of these can make excellent pets and be life long companions when properly handled and cared for. The secret is to master the ability to "read" Amazon body language, allow your bird space when necessary, and just be content with coming back later if the Amazon does not seem to be in the mood for you.
